It is, for instance, presented in a polite language seemingly addressed to a gentle, modern, educated readership, carefully avoiding any details that might have been considered even remotely scandalous. By referring to the works in the areas of political and philosophical ideas informed by Hannah Arendt and assembled by several eminent Japanese scholars, this paper first examines the historical and philosophical backgrounds of the modern nation of the West in an attempt to highlight two dominant theories for its origins and characteristics. Building on the postcolonial approaches initiated by John Barrell's influential study, which tends to focus on the variety of figures of the economic and political \"other,\" this paper deals with the traumatic process in which the modern subjects come into being as a result of being deprived of their feudal-based, God-given, personal characteristics.
