He worked passionately on many paintings while also doing dye works for a living. Isson pioneered a form of painting that portrays a unique atmosphere of highly decorative tranquility. Most of his work, however, never appeared in the public view, and he remained largely unknown to the general populace throughout his life. This paper critically discusses his work during the Amami Period, the height of his artistry, as distinct Japanese-style paintings blossomed on the Ryukyuan archipelago.
