| 内容記述 | 英語が事実上の「世界共通語（リンガ・フランカ）」になったと言われて久しい。しかし英語という「共通語」は中立的ではない、と「言語帝国主義」は警告する。アメリカの文化帝国主義や英語支配を通して、英語は世界で差別的構造を作 り出しているのだ。戦後の沖縄では、米軍による支配が1972年まで続き、なおも広大な米軍基地が存在する。物理的にも 文化的にもその影響は強大なものがあり、基地経済の拡大とともにアメリカ文化至上主義も浸透した。以来、特に英語を 学ぶ学生たちの間には、アメリカ文化と英語を単なる社会的地位向上のためのツールとして習得するのではなく、自らの アイデンティティさえもアメリカ文化へと同化していく現象が起こっている。「言葉の乗り換え」が「自己の乗り換え」を引き起こす植民地精神への改造が進んでいるのだ。沖縄キリスト教学院大学英語コミュニケーション学科に在籍経験のあ る女子学生に２年間にわたる聞き取り調査をおこない、その結果をもとに沖縄におけるアメリカ文化至上主義と英語支配、そして「自己の乗り換え」の現実は深刻なものがある。大学における英語教育と建学の精神の整合性が問われる今、沖縄 にとって必要な英語教育のあり方とは異文化理解と自らの沖縄文化に対する認識を深めることだ。English has become a de facto“international language.”However,“English”is not merely another popular language the world loves to learn. Its dominance constitutes and reconstitutes structural and cultural supremacy over other culture and language. The phenomenon is most prevalent in Okinawa where vast U.S military bases are concentrated. Students who are learning English at Okinawa Christian University show their desire not only to master the language, but also to assimilate into American culture, and eventually to become an American. On the other hand, their cultural identity as an Okinawan becomes“the inferior Other”in the hierarchy of linguistic and cultural imperialism. The University’s curriculum reform is imperative to deconstruct the American cultural and linguistic imperialism and foster a sense of world citizenship. | |||||
